June: The Fiscal Year End and A Month for New Beginning

Written by Chris Cullen on 6/14/2024

For many companies and government agencies, June marks the end of the fiscal year. The calendar year ends in December with holidays and begins again in the following January with resolutions about the coming year. The fiscal year is a 12-month period that can be chosen by a company to facilitate planning, budgeting, or revenue cycles. Most financial reports, external audits, and federal tax filings are based on a company's fiscal year from July through June.

In fact, June is the halftime of the calendar year, a time to take stock and adjust for your business, a chance to map out the beginning of the new fiscal year with refreshed budgets and strategies. In sports, it provides participants with a moment for rest and motivational speeches. In professional sports, halftime provides an opportunity for entertainment and actual refreshments for everyone else.

June has also been called “summer’s sweet spot.”

Coupled with the moderate weather, and the conclusion of the school year, June has been a top three favorite month for Americans for decades. According to Gallup surveys June has been #2 or #3 since 1960. May is the annual top vote getter for favorite month, and Fall has been gaining popularity of late with October climbing into the #2 spot in 2005.

While Father’s Day may never overcome Mother’s Day, for reasons best left for each of us to ponder, June has an excellent case for being more important, boasting both Juneteenth and Pride Month.  Juneteenth is celebrated on June 19 and commemorates the freeing of slaves in Texas in 1865 and is often considered the country's second Independence Day. Pride month celebrates the LGBTQ+ community, raising awareness and giving voice to those who have faced discrimination.

In addition to school years and fiscal years ending, June is also the most popular month for new beginnings—weddings. June is named after the Roman goddess of marriage, home and family.

Many small businesses in Maryland work like families and many are family-run businesses. The very best businesses treat all their employee teams like family.

The MarylandSaves program was designed to give business owners in Maryland a free and easy way to take care of their “work family” by providing a payroll-deducted retirement savings program for all their employees. As the slogan goes, “for Maryland businesses and the people that make them great.”

June is a more than just the best summer month. It is a month for new beginnings, universal inclusiveness, equity and fairness.
