Expressions of May

May definitions:

1. expressing possibility.

"that may be true"

2. expressing permission.

"may I ask a few questions?"

“May the road rise to meet you…”

“Your mileage May vary.”

“Gather ye Rosebuds while ye May.”

“May-December Romance.”

“Devil May Care.”

“May the Best Man/Woman Win.”

“May you be in heaven a half hour before the devil knows you're dead.”

“Mother May I…”

It is the name of a deeply manipulative and deceitful character in Chaucer’s “The Merchant’s Tale” but also the name of a loving and wise elderly relative in Spiderman. May might be the most versatile and useful of all the month names. Nobody gets involved in a March-November romance, without May, it has no sizzle.

May, by definition, “expresses possibility” and also “asks for permission.” May is definitely the politest month, being the month of Mother’s Day and all.

Possibility and Permission.

The month of May is a good time to start thinking about the upsides, the positives, and the potential for a brighter future, and you can give yourself permission to think on the bright side. Fortune favors those that think positively, give themselves permission to dream and then, importantly, take decisive action. Securing a financial future for you and your family is a byproduct of acting today.

With MarylandSaves we are creating opportunities for all workers in Maryland to invest in their futures, and the futures of their families. Saving for the future is hard. It means that you will do with less now, with the knowledge that a lifetime of small sacrifices begets more returns in the long run. Mother’s Day is a moment to cherish the love and support we give and receive in our families. Memorial Day is a solemn reminder that we have the responsibility to recognize and make good on the sacrifices of the generations of service members who have made our way of life possible.

The larger lesson of the month of May, though, is to give yourself permission to dream about the future, whatever those dreams may be, and then take action to turn all those possibilities into gratifying reality.

May the Fourth Be With You all Month.
